Google Instant Comes to iPhone and iPod Touch

The idea of Google Instant is simple – Show you the search result as you type. At that time, Google Instance is only available for desktop browser. But today, Google brings the Instant feature to mobile devices including iPhone, iPod touch and Android.

To try out Google Instant on iPhone or iPod touch, you’ll need to have iOS 4.0 or up. Simply point your mobile Safar to google.com and you’ll notice an option below the search box. Click “Turn On” to enable the Instant (beta) feature. Once Google Instant is activated, you’ll see an instant result as you type the search. While you are typing the search keyword, Google predicts your search and shows the possible keywords. You can also select any of the predictions to get the search result. This should save you a few keystokes and speed up your search.

As Google Instant is still in beta, it’s only available in the US. If you do not see the “Instant (beta)” option beneath the search box, make sure you point to the US version of Google.

According to Google, the Instant feature for mobile works best on 3G and WiFi network. So far I tried Google Instant on my home WiFi network and it works pretty good. In case you do not like Google Instant after your trial, you are free to disable it via the same “Instant (beta)” option beneath the search box.

Facebook Hiring Engineers For It’s Palo Alto Office On Indian College Campuses?

We recently had a tip off from a student of one of the best engineering institutions in India located at Kharagpur that Facebook has started the recruitment process for hiring engineers from their campus. Currently the job profile that is being offered is of a Load Balancer at Facebook’s Palo Alto office and the pay package stands at 80,000 USD per annum which is huge for a fresher by Indian standards.

Facebook has been working on a new kind of data structure called the HayStack. The speciality of this data structure is that it reduces the image upload request load off Facebook’s servers. Facebook receives close to 16 million photo upload requests each minute. So instead of uploading these photos one by one, the photos are put in a special array and this array is then uploaded at once.

The engineers who are hired from India will either be made to work on this new technology or as a Load Balancer. I wonder, why is Facebook not hiring core developer talent from Indian campuses.

Hong Kong Wants More Indian IT Firms To Set Shop In Their Country

Not only is US aware of India’s IT expertise and ability. Even countries in the western part of the world are aware of it. In a recent interview with Simon Galpin, director-general of InvestHK, he said that Hong Kong feels it has strong economic ties with India and wants more Indian IT companies to start business in Hong Kong.

The Indian economy is expanding gradually and markets like Hong Kong can provide Indian businesses a conducive environment. This is one of the main reasons why Hong Kong wants more Indian IT countries in Hong Kong.

Mobile Number Portability Is (Wait For It) Delayed Again

This is the third time mobile number portability in India has been delayed. Previously scheduled to roll out by November 1st in Haryana, the Department of Telecom has said that the service will be in effect by November 25th. They've said that all the networks are placed in order to implement MNP but haven't given a reason for the delay. "Though there had been some delay in the launch of the service, it had been ensured that the service was provided to all subscribers sans any technical glitches," said Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communications and Information and Technology.

The plan is still as planned though. MNP will be implemented in Haryana first and the rest of the country is divided into 22 zones which are clustered into 11 service areas. MNP will roll out over these as well over the course of a few months.

Samsung To Launch The Galaxy Tab In India On October 29

The folks over at CellPassion have apparently received an invitation from Samsung for an upcoming press conference to be held by them on October 29. The Invite says “let’s tab….let’s talk”. From this tag line, it is pretty clear that Samsung will be unveiling their latest creation – the Samsung Galaxy Tab in India.

The Galaxy Tab sports a 7-inch S-LCD screen made of Gorilla glass with a resolution of 1024×600. The tablet is powered by a 1GHz Hummingbird processor and packs 512MB of RAM and 8/16GB of internal memory. The Tab runs on Android 2.2 with TouchWIZ 3.0 UI on top of it.

Rumors suggest that Samsung will be pricing the Galaxy Tab at around Rs. 40,000. It will be interesting to see if Samsung launches a subsidized carrier version of the Galaxy Tab with some packaged data plans in India.

Since at its rumored price the Galaxy Tab will be priced higher than the iPad, I doubt the Galaxy Tab will find many takers.

Tata Launches On-Demand Computing & Storage Service

Tata Communications has launched two different services in the cloud space to deliver self-service and pay-as-you-use IT application plus data centre infrastructure services which are easily accessible via the internet. The first one is an on-demand computing and storage service called InstaCompute and the second being an online collaboration and web-based office tool software called InstaOffice. Both these services are primarily meant for Indian businesses.

InstaCompute runs on compute and storage infrastructure from Dell and aims at providing a secure and elastic on-demand computing and storage resources to businesses over the network on a “go-as-you-need” basis. Computing and storage is based in India and can be paid for in Rupees or global currencies.

InstaOffice is powered by Google Apps and includes email, calendar, instant messaging, voice and video chat, as well as office document applications. InstaOffice joins the club of other InstaApps that Tata Communications already offers in India – InstaCC for contact centres, InstaCRM – a customer relationship management software and InstaECM for content storage and management.
