Nokia N8 Officially Available From Rogers Wireless In Canada

The highly anticipated Nokia N8 is officially available at Rogers Wireless in Canada. Rogers is exclusively offering the device at $79.99 on 3-year voice and data plans.

Straight from Rogers RedBoard, the N8 packs a 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon flash. In addition to USB-on-the-Go and the ability to record 720p HD video, some of the included features are:

• A 3.5-inch AMOLED touch screen.
• A 16GB internal memory, expandable to 32 GB via MicroSD card.
• The ability to watch videos on your HD TV through HDMI connectivity.
• Six hours of video-playback time
• GPS receiver
• Access to thousands of apps through Nokia’s Ovi Store.
• A full web browser that supports Flash-based content.

It is the first device, of many, to ship with the brand new Symbian^3 platform in 2010.

Nokia E7 to begin shipping in December?

Like the idea of the Nokia N8 but need a physical keyboard? You’re in luck, as it looks like the Finnish company’s E7 handset might be right around the corner. Via a tweet responding to a user question, Nokia has seemingly outed its E7 handset for a December 2010 release. The aforementioned tweet reads:

E7 is scheduled to ship starting from Dec10. Exact availability varies country-by-country. Check your local nokia.com site

For those that need a quick refresher, the E7 is a full-QWERTY horizontal-sliding device with a 4-inch AMOLED, polarized screen and packs a peta-band WCDMA radio, quad-band GSM radio, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, 16 GB of mass storage, 8 megapixel camera with 720p video recording and dual-LED flash, HMDI connector, and 1200 mAh battery. Nokia X2-01, successor to C3?

Success qwerty phone for middle class segment, making Nokia’s successor to prepare the C3 series, which reportedly will be named X2-01.

Appearance X2-01 was itself leaked on the website of Information Technology Ministry of China, which inevitably raises the pros and cons on the specifications of the latest phones from Nokia this.

From the rumors grow that later specification Nokia X2-01 not much different with Nokia C3, while still carrying the platform used S40. However, for the WiFi feature is planning to remove it from the phone.

Launched by Softpedia, Monday, Nokia X2-01 This will support GSM / GPRS / EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, with dimensions of 119.4 × 59.8 × 14.3 mm and weight reached 114 grams.

While the display: 320 × 240 pixels, TFT, including camera: 3 Megapixel, and support JAVA MIDP 2.1, and 42 MB of memory. However, it is not known what price and when this phone will be released.

Nokia C6-01 Starts Shipping

Nokia has started shipping its third Symbian^3 device on the market beginning from today – the Nokia C6-01. The C6-01 is the cheapest Symbian^3 handset from the Finnish giant. The phone sports a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen with the new ClearBlack display (CBD) technology. This new technology from Nokia is apparently capable of rivaling Samsung’s Super-AMOLED screen. The phone also features 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS with A-GPS, microSD card slot (expandable up to 32GB) and accelerometer.

Nokia C6-01

The back of the phone packs an 8MP snapper with auto-focus and dual-LED flash to assist night photography. The C6-01 is capable of recording videos in 720p resolution as well. The phone is powered by an ARM11 680MHz processor and packs 340MB of internal memory and 256MB of RAM. The phone also has free worldwide navigation through Nokia’s very own Ovi Maps.

The C6-01 is one of the greenest and eco-friendliest handset from Nokia as well. The phone has been made from bio plastics and recycled metals. Readers should not confuse the C6-01 with Nokia’s C6-00. The latter is a slide-out QWERTY based S60v5 phone.

MeeGo v1.1 For Handsets Released

A few days, Nokia had released the PR1.3 firmware update for the N900 which allows the device to dual-boot between Maemo and MeeGo OS. Following this, the MeeGo OS v1.1 for handsets has been released today as well with U-Boot support. No official change-log has been provided so we can’t really say what the major changes in this version are. However, we expect everything to be more polished and simply work better.

Since Nokia does not officially support N900 owners dual-booting their phones, I would suggest them to stay away as it will void their warranty. However, hackers and modders who like to tinker around with their phone are already in action and have uploaded a video of the N900 dual-booting the Maemo and MeeGo OS.

Nokia N8 and HTC Desire HD now available on Vodafone UK

You can go ahead and pity / envy UK mobile subscribers. If it wasn’t hard enough already, Vodafone has just thrown two more premium handsets into the fray to choose from. If you hit up Vodafone’s official UK website, you can now start placing orders for the gargantuan HTC Desire HD or the solidly-built Nokia N8. The HTC Desire HD is the European equivalent of the Sprint HTC EVO 4G (minus the 4G) found state-side. The phone sports a 4.3-inch WVGA display, runs Froyo out of the box and is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU. If this handset tickles your fancy, you can pick it up at most Vodafone retail outlets, or optionally online. According to Tech Radar, Vodafone have confirmed the following pricing and plan details:

The HTC Desire HD is available free on £35, 24 month price plans and customers buying the device online will get 900 minutes (compared to 600 offline) unlimited texts and 750MB (500MB offline) of mobile data,” the company added. Buying online will also give you 5MB of European roaming data in your bundle

If HTC is not your cup of tea, the Nokia N8, might be of interest. The N8 is the first Symbian^3 handset to hit the market. The phone has garnered mixed reviews (ours is coming soon), but has gone down well with the Nokia purists. The phone is free when signing up for a £30-a-month two year service agreement. The Nokia N8 is available in lime green exclusively to Vodafone subscribers; we’re still not sure if that’s a good thing.

Nokia Renames Symbian… To Symbian

Along with their quarterly financial report, Nokia also announced that there will be no more Symbian^4. Now don’t jump to a conclusion that Symbian is dead. What Nokia (and I) meant that any improvements and update which the Symbian platform will see will be passed over to all the Symbian^3 devices currently in the market.

Here is what Nokia exactly said –:

You can buy a Nokia smartphone confident that any improvements introduced later to the Symbian platform, such as the user interface, can be made available to download on your device as well. No need to wait for Symbian^4 – the improvements we were planning for Symbian^4 will be introduced as and when they become available. In fact, we will no longer be talking about Symbian^3 or Symbian^4 at all – it will be one constantly evolving and constantly improving platform.

So from the above statement it is clear that there will be no more Symbian^3 or Symbian^4. It will just be Symbian from henceforth. According to me, this is a pretty smart move to keep all the present N8 owners happy as well as to lure new customers to the Symbian platform. Along with this, Nokia also announced that they will be streamlining the development for both MeeGo and Symbian by using Qt and only Qt. The Finnish company also announced that they will be adding support for HTML5 web content and applications for both the platforms – Symbian and MeeGo – and Qt.

Nokia 5233 Firmware Updated To V21.1.102

Nokia has released a new firmware update for its popular budget touch based smartphone – the Nokia 5233. The Nokia 5233 is the 3G-less sibling of the Nokia 5230. The new firmware version is numbered V21.1.102. As of now, no official change-log is available for this firmware update. As with all firmware updates, this update should fix some bugs and improve the performance and stability of the device.

The firmware update will be rolled out in phases to various regions of the world. Users can update the firmware either by OTA (Over-The-Air) or by using Nokia Software Updater (NSU). Since the Nokia 5233 features UDP (User Data Preservation), users don’t need to make a backup of the data on their device before proceeding with the firmware update.

This post will be updated once the official change-log from Nokia is released.
