VB.NET Tutorial 1

     This is the First to our Many Part Series of Visual Basic Tutorials and Today we are just starting off like a beginner would. Doing the "Hello World!" Tutorial. We are going to make a program that when you push a button, it will give you a message box stating "Hello World!"
     First, start off by opening Visual Basic(or if you need to download and install it, watch this video http://www.techperiod.com/2011/11/how-to-install-visual-basicnet-2010.html). Next we want to create a new "Windows Forms Application" and name it "Hello World" or whatever you like.
     Now we want to drag a Button into anywhere in the little window with the title "Form1". Then make sure the button is clicked on, and go to the right and in the properties window area, find the "Text" and change that to "Show" or what you want you button to show.
     Now Double click on your button. Type in the code "MsgBox("Hello World!"). Then in the Top center, there should be a play button. Click that and your program should start. Click your button and see if the Text box appears.

First off, Lets Start with the Login Screen. It has been Redesigned to Look Better and Work Better.

Next off, there is a Totally New Interface. You still Have the Desktop, But the Main Place is your Start Screen(it replaces the start menu). The Start Screen is Programmed with HTML5 and CSS3.

Kinect May Support PC Games After All

A PC game developer claims it's adding Kinect support to a current MMORPG.

 
Korean-based developer GamePrix has launched a new MMORPG for the PC called Divine Souls. The game promises to resemble console titles by featuring a combat mode similar to what's used in Tekken and other console-based fighting games. However the big news is that it will eventually support Microsoft's motion-sensing device for the Xbox 360, Kinect.
"The game's support of gaming pads make it resemble console games even more, and is scheduled to support Kinect, a new control system of Xbox360," GamePrix's Jason Lim told IncGamers. "Kinect will soon be available as a new controller so it might be supported like joy pad mode in the future. Currently in MS, there are many game companies that are trying to apply for this system.”
But don't get your hopes up just yet, as there's speculation that the Kinect-PC marriage will remain in a rumor state. Theoretically big-name developers and publishers would have top priority, announcing Kinect support for their games before smaller studios. There's also the fact that Kinect was meant to be an Xbox 360-only peripheral, and not a PC gaming device.

So far we're assuming that Microsoft hasn't planned or developed native software for the Windows platform. In fact, Kinect may need more than simple drivers-- maybe a software suite to cover most of the hardware-related scenarios (fragmentation) that plague the PC gaming platform. Even more, Kinect uses body motions that are best suited for open space in front of the TV. That said, the desktop isn't an ideal scenario, especially for a Tekken-like 1-on-1 combat mode.

It's more than likely Divine Souls will receive unofficial support for Microsoft's Kinect. We've already seen the device in action as "hackers" have found various ways to take advantage of the Kinect's technology. However Microsoft hasn't stepped up to announce any type of PC-related official support. In fact, the company originally condemned the practice of using the device outside its Xbox 360 environment until just recently, changing its gears and embracing the efforts of the Kinect "hacking" community.

Perhaps we'll see something from a Kinect-PC marriage next month at CES 2011. Then again, maybe not.

Dell Venue Pro Coming to Microsoft Stores on November 8, Dell Online on November 15

Updated: Updated the post to include the internal image verifying the release dates!


The Dell Venue Pro will be available from Microsoft on November 8th and from Dell on November 15th according to information we just received, though no word on pricing was available. The Microsoft channel likely includes their limited selection of retail stores and their online offerings while Dell will sell the device directly from Dell.com. Having gone “hands on” with the Dell Venue Pro at Microsoft launch event (though I say “hands on” sparingly considering we weren’t allowed to handle the device) I can say it was incredibly responsive and the Dell representatives looked to be making out pretty well on the Qwerty keyboard. This device will definitely appeal to the Windows Phone 7 fan that opts away from the HD7 and it’s larger 4.3-inch screen.

Oh Look, Microsoft Is De-Prioritizing Silverlight

Back in August, we noted some online rumors that Microsoft was seriously cutting back on Silverlight, pushing internal folks to work on HTML5 instead. Our comments were filled with people saying that we were crazy and that Microsoft was betting more and more on Silverlight. So it's interesting to see that, after noticing barely any mention of Silverlight at Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference, Mary Jo Foley asked someone at Microsoft what's up, and was told that Microsoft's "strategy has shifted," and the company is betting on HTML5 for its cross-platform efforts. It's true that it's still pushing Silverlight in specific platforms -- with mobile being a big one (and, I'm sure, Netflix movie delivery remaining another), but it does seem like Microsoft is drastically scaling back what it plans for Silverlight.

US Government Sued By Google For Using Microsoft Products

Google has sued the US government for using only Microsoft products. According to Google, the Department of Interior is restricting competition by not considering alternatives like Google Apps. The complaint in this case is regarding a quotation by the department for its messaging needs. The DOI (Department of Interior) said that the solution should be a part of Microsoft’s BPOS suite since it offers unified and consolidated email along with better security.

Google contested these claims but were ignored by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) since they did not have a GSA contract. The GSA (General Services Administration) is an independent organization that helps with the functioning of the federal agencies.

MSDN Partners With Stack Overflow, Now Showing Stack Overflow Results In Search

MSDN is the holy grail of programming for Visual Studio and has saved the lives of millions of programmers all around the world. Today, it added another parallel Q&A service, which is extremely popular amongst computer science all over the world.

By now, Microsoft has come to understand that its developer documentation is so not helpful and Stack Overflow does the job of simplifying this documentation. So much so, that now, developers are getting better responses from Stack Overflow as compared to the MSDN forum. This has usurped some concerns in Microsoft and has led them to this decision.

Stack Overflow announced this on their blog saying,

MSDN is Microsoft’s mega huge developer information portal, and we’re happy to announce that starting today, Stack Overflow search results will be incorporated into the results when you search for something on MSDN. That lets you see official Microsoft developer documentation alongside the community conversations that you need to actually make sense of the “official” developer documentation.

However, the user experience on Stack Overflow and its level of expertise is unmatched. Do you not believe me? See the result on this search query. MSDN pulls up and shows Stack Overflow results at the top!

New Windows 7 Phone is Microsoft’s Better Phone than Apple’s iPhone and Others | Samsung Latest Update

Microsoft has just released to the competitive world of cellphones with their new Windows 7 Phone of Samsung available with the AT&T provider. This will strongly compete against Apple’s iPhone, RIM, and the Google Android syndicate. Seeing it in today’s event, and the gorgeous Windows 7 phones on display here from AT&T, it’s clear that Microsoft aims to outclass the competitors.

The first phone with Windows Phone 7 Series will be the Samsung Focus, which will be available at AT&T stores nationwide on Nov. 8, 2010 for $200 with a two-year contract requirement, according to Microsoft this Monday.

“For starters, Microsoft has made it relatively easy to build an app for Windows 7 Phone,” Darren Cross, head of business development at Fandango said.

“This is something Windows 7 Phone has borrowed from the Xbox, which has famously pro-active developer support for game-makers. Microsoft even holds events for game devs to gather and learn new stuff from Microsoft hands-on. They’re there just as much as you want them to be,” says Fandango’s PR director, Harry Medved.

Microsoft announced a total of nine phones for the U.S. market alone, including one from Dell, and it has 60 other carriers in 30 countries to use Windows Phone 7 phone app.

“Microsoft, by comparison, has had two: the Xbox and the AT&T’s U-verse box.” That gives Microsoft a “stronger position in the living room,” says Rubin.

The Microsoft Windows 7 software is designed to work well with Microsoft’s cash-cow Office applications and to connect to Xbox Live, which is the company’s online game service. But, Windows Phone 7 would not support copying and pasting of text, but Microsoft announced Monday that the feature would be introduced through a software update early next year.

“We want you to get in, get out and back to your life,” Microsoft CEO Steven Ballmer said at an event in New York. He called it “a very different kind of phone.”

This is partly based on the aesthetic from the company’s Zune media players. It is centered around “tiles” on the front screen that are supposed to tell the user at a glance about important new information on their e-mail, Facebook updates, etc.

If Microsoft Windows 7 turns out to be a success, then this can be considered as a breakthrough in the phone app development for phones. Their challenge here now is how the phone manufacturers can release phone models that will maximize the potential of Windows 7 app so that both Microsoft and the phone manufacturer will benefit to the success.
