has surpassed $1 billion in worldwide sales, after only six weeks of sales, Activision announced earlier this week. The video game's first day sales set a record, eclipsing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the prior record holder, which had $310 million in sales its first day.Activision also announced that the game is setting online usage records. For one thing, since its launch on November 9th, Call of Duty: Black Ops players have played more than 600 million hours, or the equivalent of more than 68,000 years.
Call of Duty: Black Ops players are spending an average of 87 minutes per day online. That exceeds the average of Facebook users, who spend about 55 minutes a day online. Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing said,
"The $1 billion milestone is staggering, but it doesn't tell the whole story. The true measure of Black Ops' success lies in the millions of hours that people are investing in this game and this community. Call of Duty has in many ways become one of the world's most engaged social networks. We are grateful to and humbled by the ongoing support of the gaming community and we are committed to continuing to give them the greatest gaming experiences that we can."
