Call of Duty: Black Ops passes $1 billion in sales

After raking in $360 million on its first day of release alone, Call of Duty: Black Ops has surpassed $1 billion in worldwide sales, after only six weeks of sales, Activision announced earlier this week. The video game's first day sales set a record, eclipsing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the prior record holder, which had $310 million in sales its first day.

Activision also announced that the game is setting online usage records. For one thing, since its launch on November 9th, Call of Duty: Black Ops players have played more than 600 million hours, or the equivalent of more than 68,000 years.

Call of Duty: Black Ops players are spending an average of 87 minutes per day online. That exceeds the average of Facebook users, who spend about 55 minutes a day online. Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing said,

"The $1 billion milestone is staggering, but it doesn't tell the whole story. The true measure of Black Ops' success lies in the millions of hours that people are investing in this game and this community. Call of Duty has in many ways become one of the world's most engaged social networks. We are grateful to and humbled by the ongoing support of the gaming community and we are committed to continuing to give them the greatest gaming experiences that we can."

Amazon Announces 70% Revenue Share For Kindle Publishers

If you write great content, you should definitely get a bigger pie of the revenue. This can be for books, videos and all other content created by users. Looks like Amazon is now understanding this and doling out a bigger pie; 70% of the revenue share; to Kindle magazine and newspaper publishers.

If you sell a title or subscription on Amazon Kindle, you will now be entitled to a 70% revenue share. The new 70% royalty will start from December 1, 2010. However, there are some restrictions on who can earn a 70% revenue, which include magazines and newspapers which are sold to:

  • Customers who can read the title on all Kindle devices and applications.
  • Customers who can read the title in all geographies for which the publisher has rights.

If you are a blog owner and publish your blog on Kindle, you will not be able to take advantage of the new revenue sharing model.

More info at the Amazon blog.

Camaro PC more flashy than hot performer

Most people, particularly gamers, want high-performance computers. Meanwhile, muscle car fans love the Chevy Camaro. How about combining the two: a PC that's a dead ringer for a Chevy Camaro.

That's what you can buy at ChevyMall.com. Colors include Aqua Blue, Black, Cyber Gray, Inferno Orange, Rally Yellow, Silver Ice, Summit White, and (probably the most desired) Victory Red. Pricing starts at $1239.99.

Unfortunately, the PC looks a lot hotter than it really is. For example, the CPU is a very modest dual core Intel® Atom N330. There's no SSD option, either, and the only upgrades you can make are to increase the RAM from 4GB to 8GM and the hard drive from 250GB to 500GB. Don't expect SLI, either: graphics are NVIDIA ION.

The machine is loaded in terms of ports and such, and integrates them well into the "car." For example, there are two USB ports in the grille of the car, a slot-load DVD drive at the front bumper, and two more USB ports on the back. It has the requisite VGA port, Gigabit LAN port, and an HDMI port, as well as audio out and a microphone. It also has built-in 802.11n, and runs Windows 7.

Fully pimped out, the Camaro Personal Computer is only $1599.99. As we said, however, it's hardly as hot as the exterior makes you think it is. Still, it will look nice beneath your desk. Unfortunately, as much as you might want it to, particularly with the new channel "The Hub" which is showing the first generation Transformers cartoon, it won't change itself into an Autobot.

Will Galaxy Tab buyers blink? Samsung to announce 7" Super AMOLED screens

The Super AMOLED displays on Samsung's Galaxy S smartphones are one of their best features, and it was disappointing that Samsung couldn't come up with a 7" version for the Galaxy Tab tablets. That said, the news that Samsung has developed a 7" Super AMOLED screen might make early Galaxy Tab buyers think twice.

Samsung Mobile Display is reportedly set to unveil a new 1200 x 600 7" Super AMOLED panel at the FPD-International exhibition in Japan in two weeks. However, full production will not arrive until mid-2011. The current tab has a 1024 x 600 display, by the way.

There's not much more known right now, but probably more will be revealed at FPD-International. For those wanting a 7" Android tablet, mid-2011 (and likely, a lot longer to incorporate it into actual products) is a long ways off if they want to wait for Super AMOLED.

Will this affect your decision on the Galaxy Tab? Post your opinion in the comments.

AT&T and Samsung Go Green With the Samsung Evergreen

AT&T is launching a Samsung 'texting' phone on November 7th. The big deal about this phone is that it caters to people for whom being environmentally friendly is important. The Samsung Evergreen is made out of 70 percent recycled post-consumer materials, and its packaging is made from 80 percent recycled post-consumer paper.

Not green enough? Get this. The ink on the packaging is soy ink and instead of a paper manual, the instructions come on a CD (which aren't really green though).

The Evergreen is a 3G capable phone, with a 2.4 inch display, QWERTY keypad, 2 MP camera with video recording capability and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Samsung Evergreen will sell for $29.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. In addition, Samsung has promised to donate $1 to the nonprofit Cell Phones for Soldiers, up to $100,000 (we're helping the earth AND fellow humans. WIN!).

Samsung To Launch The Galaxy Tab In India On October 29

Samsung Galaxy Tab
The folks over at CellPassion have apparently received an invitation from Samsung for an upcoming press conference to be held by them on October 29. The Invite says “let’s tab….let’s talk”. From this tag line, it is pretty clear that Samsung will be unveiling their latest creation – the Samsung Galaxy Tab in India.

The Galaxy Tab sports a 7-inch S-LCD screen made of Gorilla glass with a resolution of 1024×600. The tablet is powered by a 1GHz Hummingbird processor and packs 512MB of RAM and 8/16GB of internal memory. The Tab runs on Android 2.2 with TouchWIZ 3.0 UI on top of it.

Rumors suggest that Samsung will be pricing the Galaxy Tab at around Rs. 40,000. It will be interesting to see if Samsung launches a subsidized carrier version of the Galaxy Tab with some packaged data plans in India.

Since at its rumored price the Galaxy Tab will be priced higher than the iPad, I doubt the Galaxy Tab will find many takers.
