Android nears 50 percent global market share: Canalys Q2 2011 report

Android has the Lion's share (pun intended) of the U.S. smartphone market, at 29 percent, but its global market share makes that look silly, according to a new report by Canalys. That report says that Android has 48 percent, nearly one-half, of the world smartphone market.

Market research firm Canalys' Q2 2011 report also stated that during Q2, 107.7 million smartphones shipped globally, which represents 73 percent growth year-over-y6ear. Of those, 39.8 million smartphones were shipped in APAC, and 35 million units in EMEA. 32.9 million smartphone units were shipped in the Americas.

During Q2, Android shipments hit 51.9 million, growing 379 percent compared year-over-year. The popularity of the platform in Asia was amazing. For example, in South Korea, Android captured 85 percent market share. That makes extreme sense since that's the home of Samsung. Meanwhile, in Taiwan, Android grabbed 71 percent share.

379 percent growth is amazing, but down from Q1's year-over-year growth. Canalys' report for Q4 2010 showed 615 percent growth from Q4 2009 to Q4 2010.
At the end of 2010, Symbian was in second place with 30.6 percent, but in Canalys latest report, that's no longer the case. iOS has risen to the second spot in global rankings, with 19 percent market share.

The big losers might be RIM and Microsoft. RIM dropped from 14.4 percent to 12 percent globally. Meanwhile, Microsoft, despite its brand-spanking new Windows Phone is still dropping. It shipped less than 1.5 million Windows Phone-based smartphones during Q2, amounting to just 1 percent market share, which is a 52 percent drop year-over-year.

Nokia savior might be Microsoft. Microsoft's savior might be Nokia. Since the two are known to be partnering on Windows Phone-based Nokia phones, the two are depending on each other to restore their declining fortunes.

Meanwhile, Android keeps skyrocketing globally, and iOS continues to trundle along, nicely. Whither webOS?

Android 2.3 Gingerbread Coming November 11

Word on the interwebz is that the next version of the Android OS – Android 2.3 Gingerbread is set to be launched soon. The new SDK for Android 2.3 will be unveiled on November 11. Soon after, it should start being available on major handsets like the Nexus One, Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Droid X etc.

The speed with which handset makers and carriers have been rolling out updates has been abysmally slow in the past, but it is expected to improve. Samsung will finish rolling out Android 2.2 Froyo for the Galaxy S variants by the end of November, and we can probably expect Android 2.3 by January 2011.

HTC Legend To Get Android 2.2 Update In The ‘Coming Weeks’

When Android 2.2 was released by Google, HTC had promised that most of their phones launched in 2010 will be getting the update. However, after that only the Desire Android 2.2 update was the most talked about. Now since the Desire Android 2.2 update has already been rolled out or is being rolled out in certain regions, the company has moved on to the small brother of the Desire – the Legend.

HTC Legend

HTC has confirmed via their Facebook account that they will be rolling out the Android 2.2 update for the Legend in the ‘coming weeks’. Owners of unbranded/unlocked Legend will be among the first one to get the update with operator locked owners getting the update once it has been approved by their carrier.

It’s nice to see HTC offering Android 2.2 update for the Legend. Being a Legend owner myself, I had almost given up hope of the phone getting the Froyo update.

Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.2 Update Starts Rolling Out In The U.K

After so many delays and ‘pull back’, the Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.2 update has started rolling out officially from today in the U.K. This piece of news was confirmed by Samsung UK tweet. The Android 2.2 update will continue until the end of November. However, the update won’t be an OTA (Over-The-Air) one.

Users who want to update their phone to Android 2.2 need to use the Samsung KIES software to do so. They can download the latest version of KIES from here.

Samsung had earlier released an official Android 2.2 update for the Galaxy S but the firmware but so buggy and slow that they had to pull it back. I have already flashed this new official firmware on my Galaxy S and I must say it’s great. The phone is smooth and there are no lags at all.

Hopefully, Samsung will roll out the Android 2.2 firmware update to other countries soon.

Android is Now The Most Popular Mobile OS in the US

Android has now officially overtaken the iPhone and Blackberry platforms in the US smartphone market. The Android OS now leads the others with a 43.6% market share. Apple has a 26.2% market share with the iOS platform while RIM comes in at the third place with a 24.2% share.
Microsoft’s share has plummeted down to a measly 3.0% but it is widely expected to improve following the Windows Phone 7 launch. Apple is the undisputed leader though, when it comes to hardware. The iPhone is undoubtedly the single most popular phone in the US.

Worldwide, Symbian still is a force to reckon with. It leads the market with a 33% market share. In India, Symbian (Nokia) still has over 65% of the smartphone market share.

Spy App Forwards Cheating Partner's Texts, Gets Banned From Android Store

Looking to conduct surveillance on that philandering boyfriend of yours? Well, for about 18 hours yesterday, you could've downloaded something called 'Secret SMS Replicator' -- a new app that, once planted on someone else's Android smartphone, will secretly forward their text messages to another phone.

Created by DLP Mobile, 'Replicator' hit the Android market Wednesday, much to the horror of just about everyone. "This app is certainly controversial, but can be helpful to people in relationships where this type of monitoring can be useful," Zak Tanjeloff, chief executive of DLP, told the New York Times. The best part about 'Replicator,' according to DLP, is its totally terrifying secrecy. "The app is unique because there is no visible icon or shortcut to access it, so once it's installed, it will continue to monitor without revealing itself," the company says. Great! Oh, and as for those who may be worried about a random stranger planting 'Replicator' on their Android, Tanjeloff recommends "keeping your phone close by, or make sure people trust you."

The developers reportedly marketed the app to Android instead of the iPhone, because they didn't think it would pass Apple's App Store approval process. On Wednesday evening, however, a Google spokesman confirmed to the Times that the app has indeed been suspended from the Android Market because it "violates the Android Market Content Policy." And how!

2.3 to be next major Android release from Google?

If you thought you would have to wait until Android 3.0 to see the next major revision of Google’s mobile OS, think again. In an Android support thread, discussing an issue with Android 2.2 and WPA enterprise wireless networks, an anonymous Google employee let out a little bit of a bombshell. As the post reads:
Yes, Android 2.3 is a “major release”, and this patch will be available then.
The “patch” the Google employee is referring to is a fix to allow WPA EAP authentication that was, apparently, broken, committed to the Android repository, and pushed out with Android 2.2. Sounds good to us, but what do you think Android 2.3 is going to be called? Our vote: Pavlova.

From your desktop to Android handset: Winamp makes the jump

We noticed this little tidbit hit the Android Market on Wednesday night. Winamp's official app has come to Android, in beta form, for Android 2.1 and higher handsets.

Winamp is a popular desktop music player that’s been around since 1997, written by Nullsoft.
Here's how it's described:

Winamp for Android (beta) offers a complete media management solution for 2.1 OS & above. Sync your music from the Winamp desktop player over USB or Wi-Fi. Learn more - http://redir.su/2564.

Other features: persistent audio playback controls, play queue, scrobbling, playlist shortcuts, lock screen & widget player.

Winamp for Android wireless syncing requires, of course, a Winamp desktop application. It's that feature that sets Winamp apart from others in the crowded third-party Android media player market. If you have Winamp on your desktop, you'll want it on Android, as well. You.ll need at least the 5.59 desktop beta.

Additional details: there is a desktop widget, lock screen integration (as noted in their blurb) and yes, Last.fm scrobbling too.

Audio of Steve Jobs' epic 5-minute anti-Android tirade during Apple's Q4 2010 earnings call

Never one to shy away from a bit of a bit of hyperbole, Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who usually eschews Apple post-earnings' analyst calls, dropped in yesterday to participate in, he said, Apple's first $20 billion quarter earnings call. He also took the time to go off on a 5 minute anti-Android rant, after being prompted by a question.

The highlights of the tirade:
  • Apple has 300,000 apps in the App Store (first official confirmation)
  • Android is fragmented and getting more fragmented every day
  • Don't forget Google has admitted current Android versions are not tablet-optimized
  • The upcoming Android tablets will be DOA
  • The minimal size for a tablet is 10", and OEMs will learn that when their Android tablets fail
  • Open vs. closed is a smokescreen
  • Open doesn't always win

There's plenty more, and you can listen to it below. Of course, folks have already been firing back, and not just Google employees, either, but outside developers as well.
